Knox County Health Department Promotes HPV Vaccines During Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Knox County, December 9, 2024— January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and the Knox County Health Department is raising awareness about the importance of the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. In support of this effort, the department is offering a $10 Amazon gift card incentive for individuals who receive the HPV vaccine. Walk-in services for the HPV vaccine are available Monday – Friday.

According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly 14,000 individuals are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually, and over 4,000 die from the disease each year. However, cervical cancer is largely preventable. Nearly all cases are caused by infections with high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), most of which are covered in the current HPV vaccine.

It’s important to note that the HPV vaccine is recommended for both males and females. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests the first dose of the two-dose series be administered at age 11 or 12, though it can also be given as early as age 9. Vaccination before exposure to HPV provides the best protection.

In addition to vaccination, early detection through screening tests can also help prevent cervical cancer. The well-known Pap test or Pap smear detects abnormal cells that may indicate the presence of cancer. Another test that can be done at the same time screens for high-risk HPV infections.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women start receiving Pap tests every three years, beginning at age 21. Women over 65 with a history of negative screening results can generally stop cervical cancer screening.

"Vaccination and regular screening are key in reducing the risk of cervical cancer," said Dr. Alan Stewart, Health Officer at the Knox County Health Department. "We encourage everyone eligible to take advantage of the vaccine and the screenings available to them."
