Urban Rain Gardens
Special program on urban rain gardens - Natural Gardeners Club gathering on April 9 All are welcome to attend the next Natural Gardeners Club gathering on Wednesday, April 9, in the Fortnightly Club building (421 N. 6th St., Vincennes). A special power point program will be presented by Purdue Extension Master Gardeners Cathy Dever and Patti Moore about the urban rain garden infrastructure project in Lexington, Kentucky, that helps alleviate flooding. The program begins at 7:00 pm, Eastern. From 6:00 to 7:00 there will be a pitch-in dinner for anyone who like to participate. Bring food to share and one's own beverage. There will be disposable table service items available, but bringing one's own reusable table service is encouraged. The Natural Gardeners Club is a casual gathering of people in the area who are interested in organic gardening and sustainable living. There are no dues or officers, and all are welcome. See the Facebook page “Natural Gardeners Club” for more information. A description of the program topic: the project is “a transportation and green infrastructure project in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. The design addresses storm water runoff with the implementation of urban rain gardens and bioswales, engineered planting areas designed to collect and soak up rainfall while cleaning pollutants from the water. The project features native plantings and over 300 trees, tripling the urban tree canopy on this stretch of downtown roads. It adds nearly two acres of planting areas along the corridor. The project has won several National Awards.”
